Abstract摘要

A non-contact digital image correlation method combined with digital microscopy is used to measure the microscale displacement and strain of an ionic polymer–metal composite cantilever under applied voltage. A roughened platinum-electrode surface provides the speckle texture needed for correlation. The measured longitudinal strain varies approximately linearly through the thickness, while its gradient changes linearly with electric field. Longitudinal and transverse strains decrease with actuation frequency, and water loss in air produces contraction. The study demonstrates the usefulness of micro-DIC for characterizing electroactive polymer actuators.
